Significance

The synergistic interaction between the central π-bond of strained [3]cumulene derivatives and an organocopper catalyst enabled a novel 2,3-addition polymerization, resolving the critical challenges in the synthesis of cross-conjugated polyenes.

Comment

Initiated by CuCN, the cross-conjugated poly(1,1-vinylene) main chain is constructed via a selective 2,3-addition pathway, effectively circumventing the side reactions typically arising from 1,4– and 1,2-additions.
